Importing files into the MEDIA JUKEBOX library

If you want to build your own collection of media files, you will need to import files into MEDIA JUKEBOX for easy organization and playback.

  1. Select Tools>Import Files. Now chose which file types you want to import, and whether you want to "Search all local drives" or "Search a directory." If you choose to only search a directory, you can also opt to "Include subdirectories." Click "Import" when done. MEDIA JUKEBOX will import the files and show the "File Importing Results."
  2. Click on "Artist Library" in the Organization Tree. If you have not previously imported files, the Content View will display "Recently Imported" and "Unassigned" lists (which should not contain files at this point). Now select a file (or a number of files by pressing shift+click), and drag and drop those files into the Content View. You will see the same "File Importing Results" that you see when using "Import."

Where do imported files go?

  1. Into "Recently Imported." Recently imported is just a list of those files that were last imported. View these files by selecting Artist Library>Recently Imported. Once MEDIA JUKEBOX is closed, this list will be purged.
  2. Into each respective artist name. For example, if you import the Toadies track "Away," you should be able to click on "Artist Library," scroll down and click on Toadies, and see the name of this track.
  3. Into "Unassigned." Unassigned is designated for those files that have not been tagged or "assigned" to a particular artist using ID3 tags. If you import a particular artist and it doesn't appear under the "Artist Library," it should appear in this "Unassigned" list. Click Artist Library>Unassigned to view these files.
  4. Into "All Files." This is a list of all the files that have been imported into MEDIA JUKEBOX. Play this list by selecting Playlists>All Files. These files will appear in the Content View. Press play to play the entire list or double-click on a particular song to play that song only.

Playing files that have already been added to the MEDIA JUKEBOX library

To play a file that has been imported into MEDIA JUKEBOX, click on an artist in the "Artist Library" and

  1. double-click on a track in the Content View or
  2. Click "Play" in the Player Window.

To allow MEDIA JUKEBOX to automatically play a particular file type, go to Options>File Associations, and check those files you want MEDIA JUKEBOX to play. A red check will appear next to those file types that have been selected. To prevent other players from hijacking your files and trying to play them, also check "Always take control of file types on startup."

*RealPlayer must be installed in order to play RealMedia files.

Tagging imported tracks

Some mp3 files you download will already have tag information embedded in the file. Tags keep track of useful information about a music file, such as artist, album and track title. Those tracks with tags will categorized by MEDIA JUKEBOX. To add a tag to a track or edit an existing one, right-click ( or shift+click to select multiple tracks )on the track and select Edit>Properties. The Media Files Properties box below will appear:

Click on "General Information" and type in the name, artist, album, a comment, and the genre and year. Click on "Advanced." Here you can enter additional information such as URL's, notes, lyrics, and even art. Once you tag an "Unassigned" file with artist information, it will be removed from this "Unassigned" list and classified under the "Artist Library" of the Organization Tree.

Clicking on "Format" gives you compression and format information about a particular file.

You can also label a track with a category. Click on "Category Selection" and check the appropriate category. If you don't see a category you like, click Edit>Add Category and type in a new name. Once a track is tagged with a category, that track will appear under that category in the "Categories" list of the Organization Tree.

Using the 10-band graphic equalizer

To display the graphic equalizer, click "Playing Now" in the Organization Tree while a song is playing. "Show EQ and Visualization" (located under View) must be checked. Don't forget to click the "On" button on the equalizer.

Equalizer visualizations can be viewed in both the "MEGA-ME" and "mini-me" modes of MEDIA JUKEBOX. (See CUSTOMIZE LOOK OF MJ for switching modes)

RIP OR RECORD MUSIC

Recording from audio CD

MEDIA JUKEBOX lets you convert your CD collection into a variety of digital music formats (see our encoder plug-ins page to download an encoder plug-in). These files can then played and organized with other media files. To record from audio CD:

  1. Insert the CD to be copied into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click the plus sign to the left of the "CD & DVD" item in the Organization Tree.
  3. Now click on the cd-rom drive letter to copy from and wait for the on-line database to list track names for the CD (Note: this will only happen if you are connected to the Internet) if you have an internet connection and the track names don't appear, select "Update from CD Database." If you do not have an Internet connection available, track names, details etc. can be entered manually by highlighting the tracks and right clicking and selecting "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
  4. Now click "Tools>Copy (Rip) CD" or click on the "Copy (Rip) CD" icon on the toolbar.
  5. Select/unselect the tracks you want to copy (checked tracks are copied).
The current encoding choice is displayed in the window title. To change the encoder settings, click the "Options" button and select the "Encoding" settings dialog. You can also use the "CD Settings"
dialog to adjust technical details of the ripping process and the "File Naming & Location" dialog lets you customize the way track filenames are created and the folder they are placed in. Click Ok to
return to the CD ripping dialog.
  6. Now press the "Copy" button to begin the CD copying process.
  7. Once copying is completed, the copied tracks will appear in the Media Library under the artist/album name. If the artist & album names were not entered, the tracks will appear under "Unassigned".

Analog recording from CD

If you find that recording from CD is resulting in errors or clicks and pops in the copied files, you may have a CD-ROM drive that is not capable of digital ripping (usually only found in older computers). In this case, select Settings>Options>CD Settings and choose "Analog" under CD copy mode. This is the slowest ripping method, and it will take the same amount of time to rip a track as it does to play it.

Analog ripping only works if your CD-ROM drive is connected to your sound card. If you can listen to audio CD's on your computer, then analog ripping should work.

MEDIA JUKEBOX will play the tracks and record them with your sound card. The recording volume should be adjusted to get adequate volume without distortion. If it's adjusted correctly, the sound may be
just as good as on a digital copy. To set this volume, insert an audio CD into your CD-ROM drive, go to the "CD Settings" page and select "Analog" for the copy mode and then press the "Settings" button.
Press the "Start Test" button and in about 90 seconds, MEDIA JUKEBOX will automatically select the best volume.

Recording from tape, vinyl or another analog source

To convert cassette tapes or vinyl records into digital music:

  1. Go to Settings>Options>Recorder Settings and make sure that the Recording Source is set to Line-in, Microphone or Mixer, depending on what you are recording from. You'll also need to set the
recording volume, and if you are splitting tracks, you may need to make adjustments to the minimum gap between tracks, the maximum gap level, and the minimum tracks length.
  2. Properly connect the line-in source, the microphone, or the mixer.
  3. Click Tools>Recorder and name the artist and the album. Now click "Tracks." Here you can add track names using the "Add" or "Insert" buttons as well as set the track durations. Click "OK" and
    then click "Start."
  4. Once the analog copy is completed, the tracks will appear in the Media Library under the designated artist and album. If no artist or album were given, look in the Unassigned section of the library. For further help with analog recording, please check out the "How to" section on the "Help" menu of the Media Jukebox website. The on-line help within Media Jukebox also gives information on tweaking the settings.

Adding Encoder Plug-Ins

MEDIA JUKEBOX offers additional encoder plug-ins that convert media files to the desired audio format. To download input plug-ins, visit the Encoder Plug-ins page or select Settings>Plug-in Manager in MEDIA JUKEBOX and choose "Encoder Plug-Ins Page."

Find an encoder to download and click on that encoder's name. Once that encoder is downloaded, you will be notified when the "Package was successfully installed." This encoder should appear under Settings>Plug-in Manager>Encoder.

Now, when you go to Settings>Options>Encoding, it will appear under the "Compression" list.

  1. Is your CD-R drive is supported? Check the drive at: www.goldenhawk.com/devices_body.htm.
  2. Insert a blank CD to burn to.
  3. Go to Settings>Options>CD Writer Settings. MEDIA JUKEBOX will detect your CD-R drive. If you have more than one, select one.
  4. At this point, also choose write speed, priority, CD capacity (74 or 80 minute), whether to use "Test mode," whether to "Eject after write," at what percent to normalize before writing, and whether to add a two second gap between tracks. Click "OK."
  5. If you have an existing playlist, artist list, or a Smartlist you want to burn*, just click on that list in the Organization Tree and click on the "Burn" icon located on the toolbar. When your drive is detected, a CD Writer will appear with a listing of the tracks you selected to burn. Check to make sure CD capacity does not exceed 100%. Click "Start" and the CD will be burned.
  6. If you want to burn a list of tracks not in an existing playlist, simply create a new playlist with the list of tracks to be burned. Now burn this list to CD by following the same steps in 5).

* Audio CD's can only be created from a combination of MP3, WAV, WMA, ASF and JMX files.

EXPORT FILES

Exporting to portable devices may require a device plug-in

Before you can begin exporting music to your portable player, you'll need to download the required plug-in. Visit the Handheld Plug-ins page, or select Settings>Plug-in Manager and click "Handheld Plug-Ins Page."

Click on the plug-in name to download it. MEDIA JUKEBOX will notify you when the "Package was successfully installed." Now, when you click on "Handheld" in the Plug-In manager, the name of that handheld device should appear.

Working with handhelds

First, properly connect your handheld player.

When you double-click on "Handhelds" in the Organization Tree, all available handheld devices will be listed. When you select a particular device, a list of the files that are on that device, a file count, the amount of total memory, the amount of free memory, and the state of the player (which should be "Ready") will be displayed in the Content View.

To transfer files to a player, drag-and-drop the files either into the Content View of a particular handheld device or onto the handheld device item in the Organization Tree.

To remove a file, right-click on the file and select "Delete" from the popup menu. To remove all files and format the storage media, right-click on any file and select "Format" from the popup menu. Or right-click on the storage media under the player's name in the Organization Tree and then select "Format."

Converting files before exporting them

You can change the bitrate of the file and the encoding format when transferring tracks. By converting to a lower bitrate, you can add more files to your player without storing these additional files on your hard drive.

Click Settings>Plug-In Manager and click "Handhelds." To enable the file conversion option, check "Enable file conversion when exporting." You can now change the encoder and the quality.

If bitrate conversion is enabled, media files will be converted during transfer if the following is true:

The encoder quality selected is not the same as the quality of the file.

The media file type is supported by the selected encoder. (For example, if the selected encoder is "Windows Media" and the handheld device only supports "mp3", the conversion will not occur.)
